Visiting Château de Monte-Cristo: Alexandre Dumas' Hidden Castle Near Paris
There are many famous castles around Paris, but few feel as personal and inspiring as Château de Monte-Cristo, the former home of Alexandre Dumas, author of The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.
During one of our weekend trips around Paris, my husband and I decided to visit this unique literary museum. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, romantic architecture, and countless details inspired by Dumas' imagination, it quickly became one of my favorite hidden places near Paris.
As a photographer, I couldn’t resist documenting every corner of this extraordinary estate.
Where is Château de Monte-Cristo?
The museum is located in Port-Marly, about 20 km west of Paris.
It can easily be reached by car or public transport, making it a perfect half-day trip from the French capital.
Unlike the crowded tourist attractions in central Paris, the estate offers a peaceful atmosphere where visitors can truly appreciate the beauty of both architecture and literature.
The Dream House of Alexandre Dumas
Alexandre Dumas built Château de Monte-Cristo in 1847 after achieving enormous success as a novelist.
The estate consists of two remarkable buildings:
- Château de Monte-Cristo — the elegant main residence.
- Château d’If — a small Gothic-style writing pavilion where Dumas worked in complete solitude.
Walking through the gardens feels like stepping into one of his novels.
A Photographer’s Paradise
For photographers, this place is full of opportunities.
The architecture combines Renaissance, Gothic, and Romantic styles, while sculptures, decorative stonework, fountains, and centuries-old trees create endless compositions.
Some of my favorite details included:
- the charming stone dog house carved into the entrance steps,
- gargoyles decorating the façades,
- colorful stained-glass windows,
- beautifully preserved interiors,
- antique books and original editions of Dumas' works,

- the spectacular Moorish room filled with intricate decorative patterns.

The museum displays original portraits, manuscripts, family history, personal belongings, rare books, newspapers founded by Dumas, theatrical posters, and even replicas of famous objects connected with his novels.
One of the highlights is the beautiful recreation of historical interiors that transport visitors directly into nineteenth-century France.
